Losing someone you love can be heartbreaking. Even though there are similar thoughts and feelings between what people say and feel, someone’s loss is unique. There is no ‘right’ or ‘normal’ way to grieve. Some say that their world has come to a stop, for others daily functioning can be too much for them. Many people say that their life will never be the same again. Others say that life is not worth living without the person they have lost.
My Experience of Loss
In my own experience of loss, I have felt so many different feelings; anger, sadness, despair, emptiness, a desperate longing to see the ones I have lost. I have thought that I have seen the person and then remembered that they are no longer here. I have had days where I have forgotten that the person has died and then remembered that they have. There have been some very scary moments when I have questioned my sanity.
I have had many hours of bereavement counselling and it has helped me in so many ways. Telling my story about people I have lost is a big help to me. To have someone who will sit and hear my story without interrupting is so precious. I don’t have to feel any responsibility about upsetting the counsellor. This is great because talking to friends and family, I felt that I was causing them upset which wasn’t true but at the time that felt real to me. One of the ways bereavement counselling has helped me is to normalise my feelings.
How Can Bereavement Counselling Help
Talking about your loss is helpful to try to make sense of what has happened and for you to adjust to your new reality. It is important to know that no therapist can take away the pain and sadness of your loss. But I offer a safe space that will allow you to explore your emotions.
